Good book. Once again, Mrs. Dove-Lyon brings together two people who need each other. Forty-nine-year-old Rowan has led a somewhat lonely life after losing the woman he loved many years earlier, but he isn't interested in risking his heart again. He's surprised to receive a letter from the widow of an old mentor, asking him to come to London. The last thing he expected was a request for him to marry a woman in desperate circumstances. He's wary but listens to what she has to say.
 
Beatrice spent most of her thirty-seven years taking care of her ailing father while doing her best to avoid her obnoxious stepmother and stepbrother. When her father dies, her stepbrother wastes no time sending Beatrice to a private asylum to get rid of her. She feels hopeless about her future until Mrs. Dove-Lyon offers her a way out - marriage to a stranger.
 
Bessie Dove-Lyon has incredible insight when it comes to finding the perfect mates for her customers. She somehow knew that Beatrice's plight would arouse Rowan's protectiveness and that her strength of will would stand up to his occasionally overbearing nature. I liked that both insisted on meeting before making a final decision. When they did, Beatrice's beauty and something in her eyes made Rowan believe they would suit, but the kiss he requested sealed the deal. Beatrice was also profoundly affected by it and thought their marriage wouldn't be terrible after all.
 
And so they set off on the trip to Scotland via Gretna Green. Their constant proximity over the long days of carriage travel gave them time to get to know each other. I loved how well they connected, finding it unexpectedly easy to talk to each other. Neither expected the growing attraction that made it increasingly difficult to keep their hand off each other. Rowan and Beatrice are wary of the speed of their growing feelings, uncertain if the other feels the same. They have some obstacles to overcome on their journey, including an unexpected encounter with Beatrice's nasty stepbrother, but they face them all with humor, teamwork, and passion. I loved the ending and the romantic way Rowan welcomed her to his home.
 
My only disappointment was that her stepbrother did not get the comeuppance he deserved. Hopefully, that will happen at some point in the future.

Terrific book that intrigued me from the first chapter to the end. An over-protective single father raised Emerson. After his death, she discovered that her real mother was not who she thought she was. Determined to find the truth, she heads to Cider Creek and starts asking questions. This puts her in the crosshairs of someone who doesn't want her to know. When the first man she questioned became aggressive and uncooperative, a stranger stepped in to help.
 
Rory has returned to Cider Creek for the first time in thirteen years. He left right after his high school graduation, along with his pregnant girlfriend. His unpleasant and controlling grandfather made staying impossible. Since then, he built a successful business and is raising his twelve-year-old daughter on his own. He has never told his family about Liv and is nervous about doing so. When he stops at the convenience store for snacks, he's astounded to witness the rudeness that the woman experienced and steps in to help.
 
This begins a roller coaster ride of suspense and emotion. Emerson's questions have stirred up a hornet's nest. She is run off the road and rescued by Rory. Her damaged car was broken into at the garage, where it was taken for repairs. Attacks increase in intensity as Emerson gets closer to the answers she seeks. The final confrontation had a twist that kept me glued to the pages until it was over.
 
Emerson and Rory's relationship developed quickly. Rory's protectiveness was aroused immediately, quickly followed by unexpected sparks of attraction. Meanwhile, Emerson feels those same sparks and a deep appreciation for his help. Over the next few days, Rory doesn't let Emerson out of his sight, preferring to watch over her himself. I liked the trust that quickly built between them. With Rory, Emerson shared her hurt, anger, and betrayal over her father's actions. Rory used Emerson as a sounding board to help him solve his dilemma of looking for his ex-wife. Neither expects to fall as hard and fast as they do. I liked the ending.
 
I liked Rory's daughter, Liv. At almost thirteen, she's entering the volatile teen years. The author did a great job of making her realistic - not too sweet and not too dramatic, just a typical mix of the two. She clearly loved Rory, even when she was rolling her eyes at him. I liked how well she and Emerson connected.

The Fearless One - Lori Foster (HQN - Jan 2024)

When Jedidiah arrives on the scene, Memphis just knows she's up to something. He can see the desperation in her eyes and warily agrees to hire her. As they work side by side, Diah triggers his deepest protective instincts -- and the chemistry between them ignites.
 
But the more Diah digs into her family's past, the more secrets she unravels…and the more afraid she becomes. She lost everything once before. She'll never forgive herself if now she loses Memphis, too.
 
Terrific blend of action, suspense, and romance. It can be easily read as a standalone, but reading the first book will fill in some of the gaps regarding the secondary characters in this book.
 
Memphis is a tech geek who purchases a rundown campground notorious for the shady characters who used it. He secretly plans to use his over-the-top security to identify and stop illegal activity. The site was still under renovation when Jedediah (Diah) showed up looking for a job. He's reluctant to hire her, but his brother insists she's perfect for the job. I loved that conversation between the two men. Memphis appears to be a laid-back guy, but there are moments where an unexpected intensity shines through.
 
Diah has been on the run for ten years and on her own for two, always looking over her shoulder for the danger she left behind. She is looking for the truth about the deaths of her family, and that search leads to Memphis's campground. All she needs is to get hired so she has the opportunity to search for it. I liked Diah a lot. She is much stronger and braver than she thinks she is. She is also intelligent and intuitive.
 
I loved the first meeting between Memphis and Diah. Memphis is unflustered at being caught in the outdoor shower while Diah brazens her way through her surprise. The banter between them was funny as each tried to hide their immediate attraction. Neither trusts easily, and I enjoyed watching them get to know each other. Memphis senses that Diah is hiding something but he's willing to give her the space and time she needs. From the start, he feels protective of her, and that protectiveness doesn't always sit well with the very independent Diah.
 
I liked the slow building of Memphis and Diah's feelings for each other. The chemistry is there and acknowledged, but there needs to be trust before they are ready to do anything about it. I loved their interactions, from arguing over Memphis's protectiveness to Diah needling him about the way they met. But once they've earned each other's trust, there is no holding back.
 
The suspense of the story was good. Diah is looking for information about the fire that killed her family. Unfortunately, she doesn't know exactly what she is looking for. At the same time, the local crime boss has plans for the campground. This guy is seriously creepy and evil in how he runs his business in town. The tension builds slowly until it explodes in a nail-biting confrontation at the end.
 
My favorite secondary character is Diah's dog, Tuff. Like Diah, he is wary of strangers and is as protective of her as she is of him. He has excellent instincts and takes to Memphis right away. Tuff's trust in Memphis is sweet and helps Diah trust him, too. Remmy runs a close second as a favorite. He is a former thug, so he still gives off bad-guy vibes but tries to live a better life. I liked the growing friendship between him and Memphis and his surprise that Memphis trusts him. After getting off to a rough start, Remmy and Diah also become friends. I laughed out loud at Diah and Remmy's conversation about her relationship with Memphis.
 
I liked seeing Hunter, Jodi, and Madison from the first book. Hunter and Memphis have a terrific relationship as brothers, and I liked their mutual respect. I liked the teasing between Jodi and Memphis. Madison fascinates me. I need to find that series and read it.

Good book about two people who overcome their antagonism to make a difference in an orphaned infant's life. Popi agreed to be the surrogate for her sister and brother-in-law, never expecting them to die in a tragic accident. She is determined to raise the baby on her own and is shocked when the baby's globe-trotting uncle shows up to claim the baby. Apollo is determined to raise the baby as his brother's heir. He expects Popi to be relieved to escape the responsibility and is shocked when he learns otherwise.
 
Sparks fly between Apollo and Popi as each stands up for their right to raise the baby. But attraction simmers under the antagonism, and neither is sure how to deal with it. Matters become complicated when they are trapped alone on the island during a storm, and Popi goes into labor. I was impressed by Apollo's ability to suppress his fear and help Popi. During those long hours, they begin to realize that first impressions and others' opinions are not always accurate. This makes it easier for Popi to accompany Apollo back to Athens after Seb's birth.
 
Apollo and Popi are dealing with much self-inflicted guilt over their relationships with their siblings. This creates a deep-seated belief that they don't deserve the chance to be happy. Added to his responsibility are Apollo's unhappy memories of his childhood in the home he inherited. I liked seeing him use his love of gardening to work through his issues. His true nature came to the surface as the garden blossomed. I liked how Popi found a way to help change Apollo's memories of the house.
 
I especially enjoyed seeing Apollo and Popi bond over their love for little Seb. Both were determined to ensure that Seb received all the love he needed. I enjoyed seeing Apollo grow into his role as a father, especially the sweet scene in the nursery (gotta love the diaper bit!). But miscommunication and a lack of self-worth nearly drive them apart. The ending was emotional as each realized that they belonged together. I loved the surprise Apollo had for Popi.

Terrific second installment in the Powder River series. It can be read as a standalone, but you'll get more nuances if you first read Dark Side of the River. That book ended with a cliffhanger, and this one picks up where it left off.
 
Oakley Stafford has been friends with Duffy McKenna and Pickett Hanson since they were teenagers, despite the feud between Holden McKenna and Charlotte Stafford. The three friends have been secretly working together to stop a gas company from drilling for methane gas in the Powder River Basin. Oakley's vocal opposition to the drilling puts her at odds with her mother and her oldest brother, CJ. Oakley is still trying to regain her memory from when CJ "accidentally" shot her in the previous book.
 
There is a great deal happening in this book. Oakley and the rest of the anti-drilling group are fighting hard against the drilling company, which isn't going down without a fight. Oakley is convinced that there was more to her shooting if she can only remember. CJ is up to his neck in dirty dealings and secrets and will do anything to get his way. A private investigator is nosing around about Charlotte's second husband, who disappeared years ago. The sheriff is involved with a woman who isn't what she seems. Pickett has been keeping a big secret that's about to come out, and he and Duffy are looking at Oakley in a new way.
 
The twists and turns of this book kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. I worried about Oakley's safety as her memories began to return. I wondered what kind of havoc CJ was planning and discovered that he was worse than I suspected. The tension around the drilling continued until an intense final confrontation. A questionable suicide from the first book gets stirred up again when new information comes out.
 
There is some romance here, also. Oakley suddenly finds herself looking at Pickett and Duffy differently, just as they are looking at her. Oakley is confused at first because she isn't sure what she feels for each of them. I liked the realism of her struggle because it was clear she cared for both. I was rooting for Pickett because he understood her. There were some sweet scenes between them as they explored those feelings. I like Duffy, but he still has some growing up to do.
 
I liked catching up with Cooper and Tilly as they prepared for their wedding. The Romeo and Juliet vibe is strong because of Charlotte's fury at their relationship. I ached for Tilly because of Charlotte's cruelty. I like the support that Tilly and Oakley give each other.
 
There are still some loose threads hanging. Treyton McKenna is up to something. There are still questions about Charlotte's second husband. A missing person/body is still missing. I also still wonder what the story is about the teenager, Holly Jo, who Holden became the guardian of after her mother's death. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Watchers of the Night - Charlene Parris (HRS #2262 - Jan 2024)

And she'll have to decide if the connection they've forged is real enough to last.
 
Terrific start to a new series from a debut author. The story drew me in from the start and kept me hooked to the end. The blend of suspense and romance was well done.
 
The book started with a bang as a local motorcycle club's building exploded, killing at least one person. The club members were all retired police officers who worked hard to keep the neighborhood safe. The dead man's son, Adam, is a detective with the local police. Devastated at the loss of his father, he is not happy when he is forbidden to take part in the investigation.
 
Cynthia is a forensic investigator assigned to investigate the explosion. A similar tragedy in her past motivated her rise in her field. It also gave her a degree of empathy for Adam's situation, so she promised to keep him informed about the progress of her investigation. I liked her determination and attention to detail. She is a complex woman, and I loved the slow reveal of the things that made her who she is.
 
It doesn't take long for Cynthia's investigation to draw the wrong people's attention. Threats against her life rouse Adam's protective instincts, and he invites her into his home to watch over her. Cynthia is a very independent and self-reliant woman and is wary of trusting Adam's protectiveness. But the more time they spend together, the more she realizes that Adam's kindness and respect are the real deal. Adam is surprised by the depth of his growing feelings for Cynthia. I loved how quickly he understood her and her quirks. Neither expected the strength of their attraction or the brain-scrambling effect it had on them. I liked watching them work through the issues that could keep them apart. The ending was terrific.
 
The suspense of the story was excellent. Leads are few, and those that Cynthia has are slow to reveal their connection. As she and Adam get closer to the truth, the danger to them intensifies. The twists and turns of the investigation kept me intrigued throughout the book. The final confrontation was a nail-biter and kept me glued to the pages until it was over. There was a surprise at the end that I didn't see coming, and it served as an excellent wrap-up of the story. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Good book. I have been looking forward to Mike's story since he first appeared. Unlike his brothers, he is a rodeo cowboy who didn't intend to make the rodeo circuit his career. Instead, he earned enough money to follow his dream of becoming a doctor. I loved his dedication to his dream. The complication was his relationship with fellow rodeo rider Corinne. Observation has shown him that long-distance relationships don't work, so he tries to keep things "friends only."
 
Corinne has crushed on Mike for years. They've been good friends all that time, but Corinne wants more. Unfortunately, Mike's dedication to his studies brings back unpleasant memories of a previous boyfriend she felt relegated her to second place in the relationship.
 
I loved seeing Mike and Corinne together. Their connection is terrific and their chemistry is undeniable. When they are together, it is obvious that they are made for each other. But when they are apart, doubts creep in. These issues come to a head when Corinne visits Mike in Chicago. Things go pretty well as Mike shows her around his adopted city, and Corinne realizes she's made some unwarranted judgments. But when Mike gets a call inviting him to observe a surgery (quite an honor!), he jumps at the chance, leaving Corinne feeling forgotten.
 
I had a problem with Corinne through most of the book. She seemed to expect M ike to drop everything and pay attention to her and was angry and hurt when he couldn't. She didn't understand the depth of his commitment to his studies and career plan and only paid attention to how it affected her. I was very disappointed in her lack of support for the man she claimed to love.
 
Mike is a little obsessed with his goals.  He could have spared a little time to at least call Corinne once in a while and maintain their connection. But he allowed his fears and insecurities to push her away. With his family's encouragement, he learns from his mistakes and plans to show her how important she is to him. But will it be enough to overcome Corinne's fears? I liked the ending and have high hopes that they will have the happy future they want if they stick to their plan.
 
I liked the support and encouragement Mike and Corinne received from their families. Seeing more of the previous couples and how their examples and advice helped Mike and Corinne through their problems was great

Terrific start to the series. The Hudson siblings started their cold case investigation firm, motivated by the disappearance of their parents without a trace. Each of the six siblings takes turns when a new case comes in while running the family's successful ranch.
 
Dahlia came to Wyoming in search of her missing sister, Rose. She has few solid clues, but what she does have leads her to believe that Rose is nearby. She meets with Grant Hudson, who promises to investigate but refuses to believe Dahlia's conclusions.
 
Grant is still adjusting to being home after his years in the military. His experiences changed him, and the memories created a distance between himself and others. Even though he believes Rose won't be found
, he promises to do his best.
 
The twists and turns of this case kept me hooked from start to finish. I ached for Grant as a nightmare from the distant past is resurrected, and he is forced to face painful memories. Dhalia's determination to follow her instincts puts her in the crosshairs of a dangerous cult. Finding Rose creates further complications. I was on the edge of my seat during the final confrontation as Grant and Dahlia fought for their lives and Rose's. The resolution was intense and satisfying. I do wonder if there will be any more about the Hudson's parents' disappearance and if it is somehow linked to the cult.
 
I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Grant and Dahlia. There is antagonism in the beginning, as Dahlia's belief in cult involvement butts up against Grant's insistence that it no longer exists. But underneath the antagonism are sparks of attraction that cannot be denied. Grant is surprised by the extreme protectiveness he feels for Dahlia and tries to explain it away. Dahlia, who is usually very independent and self-sufficient, is unexpectedly willing to lean on Grant for support. I liked seeing the trust develop between them and seeing them share their fears and pasts. I liked the ending and seeing them look toward a future together.

I liked getting to know the other Hudson siblings and can't wait to read their stories.

Good book. After the tragic death of her husband and being evicted from the family home by her stepson, Emma moved to the French property she inherited from her husband. Julien Archambeau, the estate manager, runs the chateau and accompanying vineyard. Emma doesn't know that Julien's family owned those lands until losing them during the French Revolution. His family has been trying to reclaim them ever since.
 
Emma's arrival shocked Julien, who had been in almost complete control for seven years. He and his uncle, who owns a neighboring vineyard, have been working on a special champagne and building their reputation with the local consortium. All that is put at risk when Emma states her intention to take over the running of the vineyard.
 
I enjoyed watching the relationship between Emma and Julien develop. Initially, each was focused on their claims to the property. Emma is determined to ensure that Julien knows his place as working for her, while Julien wants to keep Emma as a figurehead while he continues to carry out his plans. Their first few encounters have antagonistic undertones despite the surface politeness. When Emma insists on learning about the vineyard, Julien tries to overwhelm her with information. He is stunned and impressed by how she soaks up and processes what she learns and the wealth of good ideas she has for the future of the vineyard.
 
It isn't long before he and Emma grow closer, with sparks of attraction flying between them. Emma feels guilty about her growing feelings for Julien. Giving in to the attraction accelerates those feelings, creating internal conflict. Emma also has some trust issues stemming from her pre-marriage days. Those feelings are exacerbated by the sense that Julien is not entirely open with her. When the truth comes out, Emma and Julien are left with hurt feelings and wondering what the future holds.
 
There are some interesting twists at the end, from Emma's confrontation with the consortium to the events of the gala she planned at the chateau. I loved the emotional ending, and the epilogue was terrific.
 
Julien's Uncle Etienne was the main secondary character. Etienne is obsessed with reclaiming the land lost seventy years earlier. He encourages Julien to do things that Julien considers underhanded and dishonorable to regain the property. I disliked how he created such an internal conflict for Julien between his loyalty to his family and his growing feelings for Emma.
 
My husband and I spent a week in Epernay this summer and enjoyed touring several champagne houses and learning about champagne's history. I loved the feeling of revisiting that trip as I read this book.

Emotional second chance story with a bit of suspense to complicate the reunion. Derek Bollinger, son of Finn and Charlie (Eagle), and Becky Mackay, daughter of Zac and Annie (Cyclone), have been best friends all their lives and have been in love since they were teenagers. After a PTSD incident, Derek disappeared from Becky's life, leaving her hurt, angry, and confused. Derek has been avoiding her, convinced Becky is better off without him. The first part of this book overlaps with the end of Hero Unbound, with added detail critical to Derek and Becky's story. Becky is furious to discover that Derek has been back in Wyoming for eighteen months without contacting her. Then she catches him running away again. After the experience that drove Derek away, Becky has spent the intervening months training her mind and body to help him - if she can get him to stop running.
 
I ached for Derek and his pain and suffering. I understood his fear of hurting her. But I also wanted to shake him for refusing to talk to her about his feelings and fears. I liked Becky's determination to confront him and make him listen to her. She gets her opportunity when the plane he uses to fly her to a ranch crashes in the Wyoming wilderness.
 
I was glued to the pages as Derek fought to land the plane safely. Besides dealing with the crash itself, Derek and Becky were faced with severe weather conditions that could also have ended their lives. I loved their teamwork as they raced to find shelter. Then came the fun part. Once settled safely in a remote cabin, Becky realizes she has a captive audience for her long-awaited talk with Derek. I loved her methods; she used every bit of her training to break down Derek's walls. I laughed out loud at his shock and then his fascination. I was so happy to see their progress and their realization that it was just the beginning of fighting for their relationship.
 
At the same time, unexplained things are happening around Becky. A horse she treats at a distant ranch has puzzling symptoms, and one of the ranch hands is exceptionally hostile toward her. Not long after, her home office catches fire. Then, there is the oddity of the plane crash. An unexpected twist brings danger to Becky's door. This confrontation was intense, but the resolution had me cheering for Becky and Derek. The ending was fantastic, and I loved the scene between Zac and Derek.
 
I love seeing the deep ties between the new generation of Linear Tactical characters. Most have known each other all their lives, and their teamwork and support are rivaled only by that of their parents. I am especially fascinated by Lincoln and can't wait to find out who Janie finds to match with him. Colton is up next, and I look forward to reading his story.

This is another terrific entry into the Duke's Guard series. In this book, we move to the home of Baron Summerfield and his wife. The Baron is the Duke's cousin, and his wife is the Duke's sister. This puts them firmly under the Duke of Wyndmere's umbrella of protection and is why members of the Duke's Guard are stationed at their estate.
 
Ryan Garahan is one of those Guards, and as the story opens, he hears calls for help while on patrol. There, he finds Prudence stuck in a tree and is overcome by the sight that greets him. I loved the vision of Prudence in his life that immediately came to him. Like his brothers and cousins in earlier books, Fate has shown him his future, and there is no denying it.
 
Prudence is no meek and petite Society flower. Unusually tall and statuesque, Prudence's horrible mother sent her away so she wouldn't detract from her more conventionally pretty sisters. Prudence is now the unpaid and cruelly treated governess for her twin cousins, Percy and Phineas. She adores the boys, and they can be found outdoors whenever possible. But Prudence's aunt is even worse than her mother, and her treatment is abusive at best.
 
Ryan being who he is, his chivalrous treatment of Prudence is no surprise. I also loved how he connected with the two boys, who reminded him of his cousins, Thomas and Eamon, at the same age. Ryan can't get Prudence out of his mind, but he also worries about neglecting his duties at the same time. Matters become more complicated when Ryan comes to their rescue again, saving Prudence and Percy from drowning. Expedience has him taking them to the Baroness, who is closer, instead of to their home.
 
I loved the quick connection between Phoebe and Prudence and Prudence's surprise at how kindly she is treated. This is something she is unaccustomed to and not sure how to deal with. I ached for Prudence and the love that has been denied to her for so long. Her aunt and uncle's treatment of her at this point was criminal. After overhearing their parents' plans for Prudence, I cheered as Percy and Phineas took matters into their own hands to save their beloved cousin. I adored the following chapters, as Ryan's protectiveness is fully aroused.
 
I loved Prudence. The cruel treatment she has received from those who should love her has impacted the way she sees herself. It hurt to see how she accepted how she was treated. But once Ryan comes into her life, things begin to change. His obvious appreciation for her looks, kindness, and intelligence helped her see herself in a new light. However, Ryan still has a hard time convincing her they belong together. I loved seeing him finally overcome the fears that kept them apart. But Fate isn't quite finished with them.
 
At the same time Ryan is handling his unexpected love life, the Duke's Guard has a mystery to solve. The horrifying rumors that circulated about Lady Phoebe in The Duke's Hammer and were thought to be resolved have resurfaced in their village. The men of the Guard have a great deal of trouble uncovering the source of the problem. Complicating matters, there are also rumors about Ryan that go against everything he stands for. I had a good idea of the problem's origins, but getting the proof was the issue.
 
I was glued to the pages as new trouble for Prudence coincided with further information on the source of the rumors. I loved how Prudence's newfound self-confidence helped her until Ryan arrived. At the same time, the resolution of the rumor scheme had me on the edge of my seat as Phoebe rushed off to confront the one responsible. I laughed, cheered, gasped, and cried at the twists during the final confrontation.
 
I can't end the review without commenting on Phineas and Percy. I was amazed that they had such good hearts with the poor examples they had in their parents. I was thrilled to see how close they were to Prudence. I enjoyed their intelligence, enthusiasm, and joy in their activities with her. I laughed out loud at their awestruck reaction to meeting Ryan and the other Guards. And I was very impressed by their determination to help Prudence.
 
The epilogue was a terrific wrap-up to the book. I liked seeing what the future held for Ryan and Prudence. I can't wait to see who is next to fall.

Secrets of Lost Hope Canyon - Colleen Thompson (HRS #2237 - July 2023)

Good combination of suspense and romance. Ryan is the youngest brother who, after the loss of the family ranch, went to work as the foreman on a neighbor's ranch while hitting the rodeo circuit in his spare time. His goal was to earn enough money to buy his own ranch. As the book opens, he discovers that his crusty boss is missing after reportedly suffering a "medical emergency." Preston's mercenary grandson has taken control of the ranch and is throwing his weight around. The confrontation goes south quickly, with Trey firing Ryan and then shooting him in the leg.
 
Amanda is the local real estate agent who has been looking for the right property for Ryan. She hasn't had an easy life, first growing up in foster care and then marrying a man who became abusive. When her husband disappeared, his family blamed her, even though his death was ruled accidental once his body was found. In the year since his death, Amanda began to find herself and her strength despite her mother-in-law's constant harassment. When her home is vandalized, Amanda must find proof of the vandal's identity to get it stopped.
 
From the beginning, Ryan has done his best to support Amanda in whatever she needs. Not only is she a good friend of the family, Ryan is deeply attracted to her. I liked how he stepped up to help her deal with the vandalism and investigate who was behind it. At the same time, Amanda helps Ryan uncover the truth of Preston's whereabouts. As much time as they spend together, it is no surprise that their feelings for each other begin to grow. But Amanda's past experiences make trusting any man difficult, and Ryan's reputation with "buckle bunnies" doesn't inspire confidence.
 
It is evident from the first that Ryan's feelings for Amanda are deep and genuine. I loved his protectiveness when she was in trouble and his kindness, patience, and compassion as she worked through her fears. Amanda is afraid to trust her judgment and tries hard to keep Ryan in the friend zone. Fortunately, the more time she spends with him, the more she realizes he is one of the good guys. But can she let go of her fears enough to let him in? I loved the ending and seeing her finally give in to hope and love. The epilogue was fantastic.
 
The suspense of the story was good. There were two mysteries to solve: where Preston was, whether he was safe, and who was behind the vandalism of Amanda's house. I could feel Ryan's frustration at being unable to find his friend and mentor. I liked Amanda's willingness to help. The scene where they showed up at the nursing home was fantastic, and I ached for what they found there. An unexpected twist in Ryan's investigation nearly cost him his life, except for a friend's intervention. The resolution was anti-climactic but satisfying.
 
The other mystery of who was behind the vandalism was mainly one of finding the proof. Amanda had a good idea of who it was. Complicating matters was the ongoing feud with her former mother-in-law. I loved the scene at the businesswoman's luncheon and Amanda standing up to the woman. As Amanda and Ryan began to close in on identifying the vandals, an attempt was made to abduct Amanda. It was a combination of a nail-biter and clown show, as the perpetrators were pretty bad. I wasn't surprised by their identities, but an unexpected revelation came out of it.

Good book with a nice blend of suspense and romance. Deke is a third-grade teacher in the tiny town of Dread Hollow. One day, he notices something is off with one of his best students. I loved Deke's devotion to his students and the kindness and concern that has him following up on his worries. When Jacob finally confesses that his parents were kidnapped a few days earlier and he has been on his own, Deke knows he needs to get the authorities involved. That means contacting his former girlfriend, Deputy Tara Norwood.
 
Tara moved back to her hometown from the city to take care of her father. Her job is much more peaceful, mainly tracking escapees from the local retirement community. But things have heated up a little lately with a rash of burglaries. She suspects teenagers, though she hasn't caught them yet. The last thing she expects is Deke to show up with a missing persons report.
 
The suspense of this story was good. Tara and Deke are determined to find the Callaways, but there are few clues to go on. Matters become more complicated when there appears to be a link between their disappearance and a thirty-year-old cold case. Their worries intensify when Jacob also disappears. Multiple twists in the case kept me guessing to the end.
 
I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Deke and Tara. They were a couple for several months before Tara abruptly ended things. She has done her best to avoid him ever since. Meanwhile, Deke still loves her and wants to know what he did wrong that caused their split, so that he can fix it. When they come together to find the Callaways, it becomes evident that Tara still cares about him, but something is holding her back. I loved Deke's persistence in trying to break through Tara's walls. Seeing how he tried to watch out for and care for her was sweet. I wanted to shake Tara when I learned her hangup because she wasn't giving Deke the chance to show the depth of his love for her. I liked the ending and seeing Tara finally trust Deke with the truth.

Terrific book. I loved the original Ryland series, and this one has been just as good. This book is about Nate's daughter, Kim, and Theo Sheldon, whom Grayson and Eve took in after Theo's parents were murdered and his sister kidnapped. Twenty-one years earlier, Kim was spending the night with her best friend, Faith, when it happened. Kim still experiences nightmares of that night, which is where this book opens.
 
When Kim awakened from yet another nightmare about that night, she knew she couldn't go back to sleep. While going through her stack of mail, she discovered another letter - the eighth one received over several years. All said the same thing, "Help me. Please help me," and were addressed to "Kimmie." She first calls Theo, who took over as sheriff when Grayson retired. As if the letter wasn't bad enough, a scream from outside her home had them rushing to investigate. Hiding in Kim's barn is a terrified young woman who claims to be Theo's missing sister, Faith.
 
Within hours, Theo confirmed that she was Faith. A man shows up, claiming to be Faith's fiancé and saying that she escaped from a mental hospital. Someone shoots at Kim, Theo, and Faith through a hospital window. A man set to go on trial for domestic abuse (prosecuted by ADA Kim) is a person of interest. Is the murderer/kidnapper trying to cover his tracks, or is this an enemy of Kim's or Theo's? The twists and turns of this investigation kept me glued to the pages as Theo and Kim uncovered the truth behind that night. As usual with the author's books, there are many questions, multiple suspects, and plenty of suspense right up to the final confrontation.
 
I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Kim and Theo. There has always been something there, but their shared trauma has kept them apart. Their chemistry is evident from the start, as is the emotional baggage that makes them avoid each other whenever possible. But working together on this case begins to break down those walls, as does Faith's reappearance. I loved watching their shields drop as they gave in to their feelings for each other. I loved the scene at the end when Nate saw them together and muttered, "It's about time."
 
One of the best things about this series and this book was seeing so many of the characters from the first series become part of the story. These men may be retired, but they are still law enforcement down to the bone. They are also Rylands and will always be there to support one of their own.

Meeting His Secret Daughter - Marie Ferrarella (HSE #2973 - Apr 2023)

Good book about secrets and when not to keep them. Five years earlier, Riley's best friend, Breena, had a relationship with a visiting college student. Breena ended up pregnant but refused to tell the father because she didn't want him to feel obligated to marry her. Riley thought she was wrong but agreed to keep the secret when Breena insisted.
 
As the book opens, Breena is dying of cancer and asks Riley to contact Matt once she is gone so that Vikki will have another parent. Riley sends the letter, wondering what Matt's reaction will be. She carries a slight grudge against him, believing that he walked away from her friend and never gave her another thought. She would love to adopt Vikki and raise her as her own.
 
Matt is stunned when he receives Riley's letter. He has never forgotten Breena and tried for a year to contact her before giving up, thinking she didn't share his feelings. Matt's reaction to Riley's news about Breena's death and Vikki's existence was realistic. Disbelief, denial, and then cautious acceptance. His memories of his time with Breena showed that he genuinely cared for her, and I ached for him when she seemed to blow him off. I liked that he wanted to know the truth.
 
When Matt arrived in Forever, his first stop was at Miss Joan's diner. I loved his shock that she remembered him and took him to task for his actions. I liked that she listened to his side of the story. Matt got another shock when Riley showed up, and he had to deal with her hostility. A very emotional scene is when Riley takes him to see Breena's grave. I liked the effect it had on Riley and her attitude towards Matt.
 
I felt sorry for Matt. He's dealing with so many emotions as he comes to terms with Breena's death and his fatherhood. Being a father was not something that had been in his plans. I liked his first meeting with Vikki, who was only told he was a friend of her mother's. She's a sweet but precocious little girl (she speaks far more maturely than a typical four-year-old), and she takes to Matt immediately. I appreciated how he stepped up even though he felt overwhelmed.
 
Over the next few days, Riley finds ways to bring Matt and Vikki together to get to know each other. At the same time, she and Matt become closer. Neither expects the sparks of attraction that flare between them. Riley tries to ignore them because Matt had been her best friend's love, but the more time they spend together, the harder it is. Matt's growing feelings for Riley confuse him. How can he be so drawn to Riley while he's grieving for Breena? I loved the ending. Matt is sweet and awkward as he shares his feelings with Riley. I loved how caution warred with hope as she listened to him, with a terrific ending.
 
The secondary characters were great. I always love Miss Joan and her no-nonsense gruffness. Her scene with Matt was terrific. I loved Riley's family and their whole-hearted acceptance of Matt. Riley's grandfather and mother are very perceptive and play significant roles in bringing Matt and Vikki together, as well as Matt and Riley. The most important of the secondary characters is Vikki. I didn't find her entirely believable for her age, but I liked her anyway. 

Falling for His Pretend Countess - Lauri Robinson (HH #1721 - May 2023)

Terrific conclusion to the series. I've loved these books about three Southern American women who escaped the Civil War privations by going to England. Suzanne's friends found love and are now happily married. Suzanne has no such aspirations. All she wants is to find a publisher for the book she wrote about her experiences during the war and earn enough money to support herself. While living in the London townhome of her friend, Suzanne learns that her next-door neighbor, Henry, Earl of Beaufort, owns a publishing house. Her attempt to get the editor to read her manuscript goes nowhere, so she plans to ask Henry to intervene.
 
Henry is one of London's most eligible bachelors, but that may not last long. Someone is trying to frame him for murder, and his reputation is on the line. He has taken to sneaking out of various Society functions to investigate on his own before returning to pretend he's been there all along. However, he isn't making any progress, and his absences are being noticed.
 
I enjoyed the first meeting between Suzanne and Henry. She has little regard for her reputation and follows Henry into a garden to present him with her request for help. Instead, they are caught by one of the ton's worst gossips. I liked Henry's need to protect Suzanne and her desire to help him. After some thought and a few unexpected twists, they agree to fake an engagement to cover their partnership - she'll help with his investigation, and he will ensure that the editor reads her story.
 
Neither one expects the feelings that stir between them. Henry resists the idea of love and marriage, influenced by his father's infidelity. But he can't deny his fascination with Suzanne, her bravery, outlook on life, and how she charms him with everything she says. Suzanne feels Henry is too far above her for that dream to come true. She is an American with no dowry and a questionable pedigree. She also has trust issues with men because of the aunt who raised her. But the more time they spend together, the closer they become and the deeper their feelings grow. Some terrific scenes between Henry and Suzanne show how right they are for each other. But in the end, can Henry convince Suzanne that she belongs in his life, and can Suzanne overcome the insecurities holding her back?
 
I also enjoyed the mystery of the murders and who has it in for Henry. The first death was that of his illegitimate half-sister, whom he was hoping to help. Before he could do so, she was murdered, and an incriminating piece of evidence was found near her body. Two more young women are also killed, and Scotland Yard begins to close in on him. An unexpected twist sent his investigation in a different direction. While I wasn't surprised by who was behind it, some details surprised me. The final confrontation was intense, and I loved Suzanne's part.
 
I liked the secondary characters. Suzanne's friends (the heroines of the first two books) were steadfast in their support of her and determined to find a way to keep her in England. I also liked their husbands and their friendship with Henry. Seeing them talk about their American wives and how they never expected to be so thoroughly besotted was amusing. I loved Henry's sisters and how they took to Suzanne right away. It took me a little longer to like his mother, but in the end, she was terrific.

Holiday Heroes - Janie Crouch, Regan Black (Calamitte Jane Pub - Dec 2023)

A Fairytale Hero

This novella was a wild ride from start to finish. Chandra returned to Fairytale, Colorado, after her daughter moved to Singapore for an internship. She bought the local café and began living a more peaceful life. That ends on Christmas Eve when several men come looking for Jackson Prince. She hasn't seen him in many years and says so, though they are skeptical. To her surprise, she finds a wounded Jackson hiding in her car when she leaves. Unfortunately, they are spotted, and a wild twenty-four hours ensues.
 
The suspense of this story had me glued to the pages from start to finish. Just when I thought they were safe, trouble came at them again and again. Jackson was a terrific hero, protective and caring, and determined to keep Chandra safe from the trouble he brought to her door. The intensity ramped up with each attack until the final confrontation that finally ended it all.
 
I loved both Chandra and Jackson. Both are older, in their fifties and have the experience to deal with what they face. I loved how Chandra was unflappable and took everything in stride - including the sparks that flew between them. Jackson has been a widower for five years and never expected to be interested in another woman. Neither has forgotten the one amazing kiss they shared in high school, and the rekindling of those sparks takes them both by surprise. I loved the ending and seeing these two realize that it's never too late for love.
 
This was a terrific introduction to the new series, and I can't wait to dive in.

 

 
A Hero in Paradise

I loved returning to Key West's Ellington Cove and seeing some old friends. I especially enjoyed spending some time at the Beachcomber, a favorite haunt from the other books in the series.
 
Will and his three adult sons came to the Cove to escape the memories of earlier Christmases. Will's wife passed away several years ago, and the holidays haven't been the same since then. He hadn't been there long when a friend from home called and asked a favor. Would he watch over a woman who witnessed a murder and keep her safe until the killer is caught? As an active police officer back home, Will's protective instincts are aroused, and he agrees.
 
Maureen is a single mother (and grandmother) who raised her son on her own. After working as a bartender at the Beachcomber for many years, she now owns the place. A few nights before Christmas, she saw a man leave a body on the patio of the bar. Afraid for her life, she contacts a friend with the Guardian Agency who promises to send someone to help her.
 
Maureen's independent spirit resents the need for a protector, but having a good-looking, older, well-built bodyguard is no hardship. At the same time, Will is impressed by Maureen's beauty, courage, and spirit. I loved seeing these two get to know each other as circumstances threw them together. It was heartwarming to see Will realize that he's just been going through the motions since his wife's death. Being around Maureen brings light and laughter back into his life. Maureen has had trust issues with men thanks to her son's father, and being around Will tempts her to open her heart again. I loved watching the sparks fly between them. There are some obstacles to overcome, but both have the maturity and experience to fight for what they want. The ending was sweet and romantic, with a bit of humor.
 
The suspense of the story was terrific. With the killer still out there and determined to silence Maureen, Will has his work cut out for him to keep her safe. The tension increased with every attempt on her life, and I was glued to the pages from start to finish. Just when I thought the danger was over, an unexpected twist put Maureen back in the bullseye. The final confrontation was a nail-biter, and I loved how it went down.
 
The secondary characters were great. There was a bit of Jess from the earlier books, and I'm looking forward to reading her story. I loved seeing more of Officer Jenkins of the KWPD. My favorites were Will's sons, David, Lance, and Eli. I loved their close relationship with their dad and their willingness to jump in and help with Maureen's protection. Their interactions with Maureen were great, and I loved the dinner scene with them at the end. Maureen's son, Tim, made a brief appearance in the final chapter, but it was fun.
