An Ex to Remember - Jessica Lemmon (HD #2900 - Oct 2022)

Series: Texas Cattleman's Club: Ranchers and Rivals (Book 6)

He always wanted a second chance with her…
All it took was a little amnesia.

Temptation. That's what made rancher Vic Grandin ask his former flame Aubrey Collins to go home with him. But when Aubrey loses her memory the very next day, she thinks Vic is her current boyfriend -- not her ex -- complete with the same explosive chemistry they've always shared. Not ready to confess the truth of their breakup, he plays along. But will Aubrey go her own way again once she remembers the truth?

Terrific second chance love story. Vic and Aubrey were high school and college sweethearts whose relationship ended with a bang ten years ago due to their differing outlooks on their future together. They have barely spoken in the decade since then. In the fourth book of the series, On Opposite Sides, we see Vic as Chelsea's brother and rival for their family ranch. As the only boy in the family, he has been the designated heir since birth. In that book, Vic comes across as rich, entitled, arrogant, selfish, and very unlikeable. I was waiting for someone to come along and adjust his attitude. As this book opens, Vic is thinking about his contentious relationship with Chelsea when a blast from the past appears.

Aubrey went on to get her teaching degree and become a high school teacher. As Teacher of the Year, she was given a year's membership in the Texas Cattleman's Club, where she knows she'll regularly see Vic. After ten years of giving him the cold shoulder, she's realized that it doesn't help her move past what happened. When she runs into him at The Silver Saddle, she decides it's time to call a truce and accepts his invitation for a drink. That drink turns into a one-off, get you out of my system night together.

Two days later, Aubrey wakes in the hospital after an accident at the TCC results in a head injury. Partial amnesia caused her to forget that she and Vic are no longer together, and she thinks they are still a couple. Her doctor worries that forcing Aubrey to remember could cause a relapse, so she suggests that Vic play along. Though he suspects the decision could come back to bite him, Vic agrees. He hopes to use the time to rekindle their relationship and earn a second chance with her.

I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Vic and Aubrey develop. Without the memory of their breakup and what caused it, Aubrey's love for Vic is clear to see. She is determined to spend as much time as possible with him while she recovers. Vic is more than happy to do so but also cautious. Because she doesn't remember their past, he is reluctant to take anything too far, but Aubrey's advances are hard to resist. I loved their time together as they got to know each other. I especially liked Aubrey's influence on Vic regarding his relationship with his sisters.

But as Vic and Aubrey's relationship deepens, he feels more guilt about the deception. His love for her has grown, but he won't do anything about it until she knows the truth. The revelation was as painful as he expected, and he fears Aubrey will never get over her feelings of betrayal. I ached for Vic as he gave her the time to process what she had learned, and I loved that he refused to give up. The depth of emotion at the end, with Vic's confession and Aubrey's realization that they had both changed and grown, was the perfect ending.

There is a little progress on the series arc involving the Thurston family's oil rights claim against the Grandin and Lattimore ranches. The stresses on both families are evident, but there is hope that new information will resolve the issue.

Colton's Rogue Investigation - Jennifer D. Bokal (HRS #2199 - Oct 2022)

Series: Coltons of Colorado (Book 9)

She's put him onto a hot story…
But their partnership is generating its own heat.

Famed true-crime podcaster Gavin Colton has returned home to dig up family skeletons. And when he rescues stranded Jacqui Reyes, Gavin stumbles onto a new story. The wildlife biologist is investigating wild horse rustling from government lands. Joining forces can help both their careers. But their mission may endanger their lives…and their hearts.

I enjoyed the suspense of this book and the opening moves of the romance between Gavin and Jacqui. Jacqui is a wildlife biologist who gets an anonymous phone call saying that the wild mustang herd in Blue Larkspur is in trouble. Though she should pass that information on to the coworker who covers that area, she is reluctant to do so before checking it out herself. Especially since that coworker, who is also her ex-boyfriend, just screwed her over with their boss. When she finds the herd, she sees indications that her tipster is correct. Unfortunately, someone runs her off the road on her way back to town.

Gavin is a true crime podcaster who plans to do a series on his father's crimes and has returned home to Blue Larkspur to prepare for it. His eleven siblings are unhappy with his plans, not just because of the memories it will stir up. They have one family enemy they are trying to get back in prison after he was mistakenly released, and Gavin's plans could make that more difficult. If he can't do the series he wants to do, he needs to find something to take its place.

Gavin spots Jacqui on the side of the road and rescues her. She has quite the fan-girl moment when she recognizes Gavin, which makes him feel good. She tells him about what she found, and after thinking about it overnight, he realizes it could be his next story. The two agree to work together to find out the truth about the threat to the mustangs. I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other. I liked how easily they could talk to each other and share things they don't usually discuss. Gavin has family issues from an incident when he was a child and often feels out of place with his siblings. I liked how Jacqui listened to him and subtly encouraged him to look at things differently, resulting in some mending of fences and the likelihood of more.

At the same time, Jacqui is drawn to men who appear to need fixing in some way. Previous relationships have left her feeling used, unappreciated, and reluctant to risk her heart again. She's wondering if Gavin falls into that category. I liked how she supported him at the family gathering. I loved how the Colton clan pulled her into their circle and her enjoyment of being part of it. I liked how Gavin and Jacqui grew closer by the end of the book wanting to see more of each other. Since the entire book takes place over one weekend, I was glad to see no premature declarations of love, just an interest in seeing where their relationship might go. There was a revelation that caught me by surprise, as I wouldn't have guessed it, and it didn't appear to be an issue with them.

The suspense of the story was good and kept my interest. I wanted to see how it would turn out. That's not to say I didn't have a few raised eyebrow moments. First of all, the first bad guy, Henry Rollins, was stupid. Instead of leaving an anonymous tip directly with the police about the upcoming theft of the horses, he called Jacqui, expecting her to call the cops. Instead, she checked it out herself first. It made some sense that Jacqui would want to be sure it was true before doing anything about it.

I enjoyed seeing Jacqui and Gavin use logic to identify the tipster, though their surveillance plans could have been better thought out. The fire scene was intense, and they were lucky it wasn't worse. The tension ramped up when Jacqui's hotel room was broken into, and the police chief's disapproval hit home. The final confrontation was a nail-biter when Gavin and Jacqui were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I liked the reality that they didn't escape unscathed, though it did have a satisfactory resolution.

Her Dangerous Truth - Beverly Long (HRS #2194 - Aug 2022)

Series: Heroes of the Pacific Northwest (Book 3)

She's living a lie
…to stay alive

Running for her life, scientist Layla Morant -- aka Regan Jones -- thinks her perfectly crafted secret is safe...until Dr. Jamie Weathers arrives on the scene of her car crash. Badly injured, Layla must tell lie after lie to the handsome local hero who only wants to protect her. Can she trust him with the truth? Or will divulging her secret prove deadly to him, too?

Terrific conclusion to the series. Layla has been waiting and preparing for this day. Almost two years earlier, she had provided the testimony that sent Douglas Glass to prison for fraud. He made it clear to her that he would kill her when he got out of prison, but nobody believed her. So she prepared to run with a new identity and everything else she'd need. When she received word that he'd been released early, she knew it was time to go. She didn't expect to be involved in a car accident.

When Jamie got the call about the accident on a rainy night, as the doctor on call, he took the mobile unit to the site of the crash. Something about the beautiful woman gets under his skin, and he feels an instant connection with her. Though he gives all of his patients his best attention, this one compels him to do more.

I enjoyed watching the relationship between Jamie and Layla develop. The connection and sparks between them are immediate, but Layla knows better than to give in to them. She has to disappear. I loved seeing Jamie find it impossible to stay away from Layla. His late-night Thanksgiving feast with her in the hospital was sweet as he tried to get to know her. When Layla disappeared from the hospital, Jamie was determined to find her for medical and personal reasons. His friend and police chief, Marcus, joins him in unraveling the mystery surrounding her. What he learns makes him more determined.

I understood Layla's fear and reluctance to trust anyone (especially Marcus). Her escape is complicated by issues caused by her injuries. I loved her persistence and ingenuity in finding a hideout where she could heal. She didn't count on Jamie's tenacity and was stunned when he found her but also grateful for his medical expertise. I loved seeing them grow closer as they got to know each other. Jamie falls hard for her and Layla for him, but her fears make her ready to run as soon as possible. I ached for Jamie when she pushed him away and loved how he refused to give up. The epilogue was a great wrap-up for the book and series.

The suspense was excellent. There are several sections told from Glass's point of view, showing his ruthless determination to carry out his promise. Meanwhile, we follow along with Layla's attempt to disappear while simultaneously seeing Glass's progress tracking her down. The suspense kept me glued to the pages as Glass closed in on Layla. The final confrontation was a nail-biter with a twist I didn't see coming.

Valentines for the Rancher - Kathy Douglass (HSE #2963 - Feb 2023)

Series: Aspen Creek Bachelors (Book 1)

Will two little matchmakers give them a second chance?

Jillian Adams and Miles Montgomery grew up the best of friends and eventually became lovers -- until Jillian got a breakup speech instead of a proposal! Jillian left town, and Miles married -- and divorced. Then a chance reunion in Aspen Creek brings them face-to-face, along with their children. As their kids become inseparable, Miles and Jillian struggle to overcome the mistakes of their past. And when Miles asks Jillian to be his valentine -- for real -- she'll have to decide whether she can trust her love and her daughter with the man who had stolen her heart so long ago…

Good second chance love story. Jillian and Miles had been best friends as children, then high school and college sweethearts. But instead of the proposal that Jillian expected, Miles wanted them to see other people. Heartbroken, Jillian moved away, eventually married another man, and had a little girl. As the book opens, Jillian's divorce is final, and she and Liliana are headed back to Aspen Creek to start over.

Miles is now the single father of a three-year-old boy. His one-night stand had consequences, but though he did what he thought was right, his wife was a city girl. Benji is the center of his world.

Aspen Creek is a small town, and it was only a matter of time until Jillian and Miles ran into each other. Miles missed Jillian and regrets the way he handled their past relationship. Though he has no interest in remarrying, he would love to restart their friendship. Though Jillian thought she was over him, when Miles showed up to welcome her back, all of her hurt and anger came rushing back and she tore into him. But underneath that antagonism were the rekindling sparks of attraction, sparks that reinforced her fear of risking her heart again. Jillian has every intention of avoiding Miles whenever possible.

Unfortunately for her, fate has other plans. When she takes Liliana to a playgroup at the library, Miles is there with Benji. To her dismay, Liliana and Benji become immediate best friends, much like she and Miles had when they were kids. Thanks to their kids, Miles and Jillian are frequently thrown together and must find a way to overcome their past mistakes.

Miles has had plenty of time to regret his past actions. He wants his best friend back and works hard to make that happen. It doesn't take long for him to realize that his feelings for her have never gone away. He wants Jillian and Liliana in his life, but he also knows he will have to earn her trust. I loved seeing Miles's slow and steady approach to winning her back. There were some sweet scenes of them together, but I ached for Miles when Jillian would panic and pull back.

Jillian fights her feelings for Miles. She's afraid of giving him her heart and having it broken all over again. It seems like every time they get together, she feels the pull grow stronger. It takes effort to let go of her fears, and she's unsure if she can do it. Then on Valentine's Day, just as she's ready to take another step forward, outside interference leads Miles to make a boneheaded decision. I ached for Jillian, who felt like history was repeating itself, and for Miles, who thought he was making things easier on her. Miles gets some good advice from an unexpected source and puts it into action. I loved his big moment at the end. The setting was unexpected, but his method was sweet and well done.

I loved the two children, Benji and Liliana. They may have been a little too good to be true, but they were adorable. It was fun to see how everyone saw the similarities to Miles and Jillian when they were that age.

The Inheritance Test - Anne Marsh (HD #2926 - Feb 2023)

Could the partnership that should save his reputation
cause the scandal of her lifetime?

To save his inheritance, Declan Masterson needs to fix his playboy image -- fast! Partnering with plain, respectable Charlotte Palsgrave for a charity yacht race is a genius first step, no matter how much she initially dislikes him. Charlotte is from an established family without a hint of a scandal. Or so he thinks…

At first, they can barely speak to one another, let alone sail a boat together. And then he has the nerve to suggest she needs a makeover! But when the two become shipwrecked, they may discover just how much opposites can attract…

Good book about two people who pair up to win a sailing race. Declan and Charlotte each have reasons they need to win this race. Charlotte needs the prize money to replace the funds that her rat of an ex-fiancé stole from her charity. Declan must prove to his father that he's ready to take over the family business. But can two very different people find a way to work together?

I liked both Charlotte and Declan. Charlotte's charity, Martha's Kids, is very important to her, and she's devastated and ashamed when she discovers what her ex did. Though she's turned over all information to the authorities, the details aren't public knowledge, and she hopes to replace the missing money before it is. Entering the sailing race is her chance to get that money. It doesn't help that her father constantly puts her down. Charlotte spends a lot of effort doing everything she can to avoid notice and blend into the background.

Declan and his brother Nash were adopted by Hollywood producer JJ Masterson when they were children. JJ is a control freak, but Declan did things his way, from becoming a stuntman and actor to extreme sports and playboy shenanigans. He's recently given up some of his antics to concentrate on being part of the family business. He's furious when JJ tells him to clean up his act or lose his chance to inherit the business. He agrees to his father's demand that he partner with Charlotte to win the race. If he can avoid scandal, he'll get the company.

I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Charlotte and Declan. Things get off to a rough start because Declan's good looks and charming ways remind Charlotte of her ex, and she doesn't trust him. Charlotte's need for control triggers Declan's contrariness, and he has too much fun yanking her chain. This leads to a bargain between them - he'll support picking Martha's Kids as their team's charity if she consents to a makeover. With a truce called to concentrate on preparing for the race, neither expects the sparks of attraction that flare between them.

I liked seeing Declan and Charlotte get to know each other. Charlotte learns that there is more to Declan than his playboy image. His protectiveness when the paparazzi show up is sweet. Declan is intrigued by Charlotte's intelligence and big heart and finds that she makes him want to be a better man. There are some terrific scenes between them during the events leading up to the race. I especially enjoyed the ball and seeing Declan and Charlotte work together to promote Martha's Kids. When a storm ends their race and shipwrecks them on an uninhabited island, the attraction between them becomes too much to resist. But when scandal erupts after their rescue, will the publicity draw them together or pull them apart? And what about the secrets neither of them had shared with the other?

Declan and Charlotte had to deal with their insecurities before they could have a shot at a life together. Charlotte had to decide if she could trust Declan, and he had to decide if giving in to his father's demands was worth the cost. I loved Declan's confrontation with JJ and his eye-opening conversation with his brother afterward. I also liked seeing Charlotte's strength as she dealt with the fallout at her charity and her father's attitude. The ending was terrific, and Declan won my heart with his emotional reunion with Charlotte.

I wish there had been an epilogue because I'd love to see how their future plays out. After checking out the author's upcoming releases, I'm excited to see that Declan's brother Nash features in the next book. Maybe Declan and Charlotte will make a guest appearance there.

Guarding a Forbidden Love - Carla Cassidy (HRS #2216 - Feb 2023)

Series: Scarecrow Murders (Book 2)

Will a killer drive them apart
Or bring them closer together?

Long before he started helping her renovate her bakeshop, Sam Bravano noticed Harper Brennen…but she refuses to believe that he's interested in an older woman. He's doing his best to charm her when they make a grisly discovery together. Someone is very unhappy with their budding relationship. Sam wants to protect Harper, but his attraction to her might make him a deadly threat…

Good older woman/younger man story. The story opens on Harper's forty-fifth birthday. Her friends have canceled on her, so she's celebrating on her own and feeling rather sorry for herself. Her husband divorced her for a younger woman, which has done a number on her self-esteem. In mid-wallow, Sam arrives to put in his bid to do the renovations on her bakery. He has a piece of cake with her and sings Happy Birthday before going on his way.

I liked the development of the relationship between Harper and Sam. There were sparks between them from the start. But Harper can't believe that a man as young and handsome as Sam is interested in an "old lady" like her and laughs off his advances. Sam is tenacious and doesn't give up. It's sweet to see how he flirts with her and pays attention to her. He's not sure why he's so drawn to her, but he won't let a little thing like age stop him. When she finally agrees to a date, she plans for it to be a one-and-done, but she enjoys his company.

When another victim of the Scarecrow Killer is found behind Harper's bakery, Sam's protective instincts are aroused. After she also receives threats, Sam is there to act as her bodyguard. I enjoyed the depth of their connection and seeing them get to know each other as Sam pictures a life together. When the sparks lead to more, it looks like Sam might get his wish. But outside interference plays on Harper's insecurities, and she pulls away from Sam. I wanted to shake her for listening to the naysayers instead of her heart. I ached for Sam, who was devastated by her withdrawal. It takes a near-death experience for Harper to wake up and realize that life is too short not to seize love when she finds it.

The suspense was good. We get a brief look at the Scarecrow Killer and his plans and motivation after his latest victim was found behind the bakery. Continuing efforts to find and stop him have been unsuccessful, and we see the sheriff's frustration. Meanwhile, someone doesn't like that Harper is seeing a younger man. First, she has a disturbing doll and a note on her door; later, someone attacks her at her home. Harper's fear is tangible, as are Sam's guilty feelings for being the reason for the attacks. There is a feeling of impending trouble as the reader waits to see what happens next. The ending is intense as the attacker makes his move. I was glued to the pages until it was all over. The resolution was a little anticlimactic but still satisfying. Hopefully, the next book will resolve the issue of the Scarecrow Killer.

Killer in the Heartland - Carla Cassidy (HRS #2204 - Nov 2022)

Series: Scarecrow Murders (Book 1)

A cyberstalker and a grisly murder…
only draw them closer.

Clinging to memories, widower Lucas Maddox hires Mary Curtis as a live-in housekeeper and nanny for his daughter. Mary fits into their household perfectly, but inexplicable attacks soon plague her. The danger to her life forces Lucas to consider just what Mary means to him, but can he keep her safe while protecting his heart?

Good book. Widower Lucas needs a live-in housekeeper/nanny. His former mother-in-law has been filling in since his wife's death, but it is becoming too much for her. He's surprised when local grocery store clerk Mary comes to him to apply, but something about her seems just right for the job. It isn't long before she is an integral part of their household. His daughter Annabelle loves her, and Lucas feels the light she brings to a home buried in grief for a long time. But unexplained attacks on Mary make him wonder what danger has come to his house and why the thought of something happening to her fills him with fear.

The development of the relationship between Lucas and Mary felt a bit uneven. Lucas has been mired in grief over Diana's death for two and a half years. He feels he has had the love of his life and has no interest in marrying again, despite the best efforts of the single women in town. So, he's shocked when he's attracted to Mary. As the weeks go on, he looks forward to going home, having adult conversations, and spending time with her. Aghast at his growing feelings, he constantly reminds himself of his devotion to his wife's memory, aided by his mother-in-law's constant comments about their love.

On the other hand, Mary crushes on Lucas from the get-go. He's kind and handsome and treats her well. Mary is on her own after her cold parents kicked her out when she turned eighteen. The feeling of family she gets from taking care of Lucas and Annabelle is a balm to her heart. It doesn't take long for her crush to grow into love, even though she knows he has no interest in a relationship. When their attraction gets out of hand, Mary dreams of more, while Lucas panics and pulls away. I wanted to shake him for being an idiot, and I was proud of Mary for standing up for her needs. I liked the ending, and the scene in the diner was sweet.

The suspense of the story was good. Mary settles in quickly, happy to have found such a great job. She's still dealing with creepy emails from an online dating attempt that went wrong but hopes those will end soon. One day when she and Lucas take Annabelle for a walk along the edges of the cornfields, they come across a horrifying sight. A young woman has been killed and set up as a scarecrow in one of Lucas's fields. Not long after, Mary receives a note telling her to leave Lucas's house or suffer the consequences. Are the two linked, and if so, who would do such a thing?

The tension ramps up when someone rams her car, sending her car flipping off the road. Who wants Mary dead? Is it her cyberstalker or one of the single women who resent Mary's place in Lucas's life? When Mary goes missing, Lucas fears the worst. By this time, I was pretty sure I knew who the culprit was, and I was on the edge of my seat waiting for Lucas and the sheriff to figure it out. The final confrontation was intense and successfully concluded. But one thread was left hanging with a teaser leading into the next book.

The Cowboy's Mistaken Identity - Melissa Senate (HSE #2961 - Feb 2023)

Series: Dawson Family Ranch (Book 10)

A case of mistaken identity
Gave him the family he never knew he needed

Rancher Chase Dawson sought the father he never knew -- not an irate Hannah Calhoun. How could Chase abandon her and their son? The problem is, he doesn't have a baby. But he does have a twin. A con man who left his family in dire straits. Chase vows to right his brother's wrongs and be the man Hannah and his nephew need. But can his love break through to Hannah's guarded heart?

Good book with an unusual storyline. Chase is the son of a single mother and never knew his father. His mom refused to talk about him, leaving Chase to wonder what the story was. After her death, he found a piece of paper with the words Winston, Wyoming, written on it. Taking some time off from his work as a ranch foreman, Chase went to Winston, hoping to find information about his father. He never expected to be greeted by furious townspeople accusing him of being a conman and a woman claiming he was the father of her baby.

Hannah had fallen hard for Kent McCord and was devastated when he disappeared. Not only did he desert her, but he also took the money he'd conned from most of the people in town, even his father. She also suffered setbacks in her business because people believed she was complicit in Kent's actions. She was understandably furious when it looked like Kent had returned to the scene of the crime.

I enjoyed the first meeting between Hannah and Chase. She was furious, and he was confused by the animosity from people he'd never met. It took some work, but Chase convinced Hannah he wasn't Kent. Once she calmed down, Hannah could see the differences between the two men. She was moved by Chase's immediate connection with her son, Danny. Chase barely recovered from that surprise when she introduced him to Kent's father, Owen.

I ached for Chase as he learned the truth of his past. Owen's story was heartbreaking, and I hurt for everything he'd been through. I liked how Hannah served as a bridge between the two men as they got to know each other. There are also sparks of attraction between Hannah and Chase. But Hannah is wary of getting involved with another man after having her trust so brutally betrayed. Their feelings grow stronger as Hannah learns that she can trust Chase. However, Chase has spent so long guarding his heart that he finds it difficult to let down his walls enough to allow Hannah or Owen in.

The book's ending is deeply emotional, with more shocks involving Kent, a health scare for Owen, and Chase having difficulty facing his feelings for Hannah and Owen. I ached for Hannah as she stood up for herself and her needs, even if it meant losing Chase. I had several instances of wanting to shake Chase for being so blind. I loved the scene in the barn when Chase overhears Owen talking to little Danny and the impact it had on him. I liked his big moment with Hannah as his walls finally crumbled. The epilogue was terrific.

The scenes with Chase and Danny were sweet. It's always fun to see guys melt in the presence of a baby, and Chase was no exception. He's experienced with kids thanks to many relations on his mother's side, which helps him get past Hannah's walls. I was also moved by the scenes where Hannah and Owen deal with various town residents and the fallout from Kent's actions. They were heartbreaking but realistic.

Honolulu Cold Homicide - R. Barri Flowers (HI #2125 - Feb 2023)

Series: Hawaii CI (Book 3)

His latest case is a link to the past
And a cold case that's all too personal…

When a new case carries echoes of his sister's cold case murder, Detective Sergeant Lance Warner is visited by another ghost from the past. Caroline Yashima isn't only the CJD specialist assigned to work alongside him, she's also the ex he regrets walking away from. He's not sure if he can expect a second chance -- or just a chance for closure. But when Caroline becomes a target, he knows that he doesn't want to live without her.

This book sucked me in from the first page and kept me hooked to the end. It opens with a prologue describing the murder of a young woman. Twenty years later, the woman's younger brother, Lance, is a Honolulu PD detective whose latest case has disturbing similarities to his sister's murder. As a result, Bonnie's case is being reopened, and a cold case expert is assigned to work with him. He's surprised to discover that his new associate is his ex-girlfriend, Caroline.

Caroline is a cold case specialist who recently solved a forty-year-old murder. She never expected to be working with Lance and is wary of spending time with the man who broke her heart. But Bonnie's case has intrigued her since she learned of it from Lance, and she welcomes the chance to bring closure to him.

The suspense of this book kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. The idea that a serial killer would kill once and then wait twenty years before killing again was unheard of. Still, the similarities between the cold case and the recent murders were undeniable. I was fascinated by the steps in the investigation as Caroline and Lance interviewed witnesses and suspects from the past and present. Are there links between the murders, or does a copycat carry out the current murders? The tension ramps up when Caroline receives threats warning her to back off from her investigation. There were plenty of twists and turns in this case that kept me guessing right to the end. Just when it looked like the cases were solved, an unexpected revelation called part of the case into question. I was on the edge of my seat as Caroline found herself in mortal danger and Lance racing to the rescue. The final confrontation was a nail-biter, and I loved that Caroline played a significant role in her own rescue.

I enjoyed seeing the rekindling of the relationship between Lance and Caroline. Lance has regretted his actions every day of the two and a half years since their breakup. He would love a second chance but has no idea if it is possible. Caroline is wary of spending time with him and starts out determined to keep things business-only. However, it doesn't take long for her to realize that she never stopped loving him. I liked that she didn't make it too easy on him. Lance had to do some serious explaining and groveling before she let him off the hook. I liked the epilogue and seeing where they were a few months later.

Captured on Kauai - R. Barri Flowers (HI #2101 - Oct 2022)

Series: Hawaii CI (Book 2)

Trusting each other
Could cost them everything…

To discover why a fellow DEA agent was murdered, Dex Adair is undercover at Kauai's most beautiful resort. And when its owner, Katrina Sizemore, receives threatening letters, Dex wonders if her husband's recent death could be connected. But uncovering an insidious conspiracy together means Dex and Katrina must put their fragile trust -- and irresistible passion -- on one deadly line…

Good story. I liked the mix of suspense and romance. The book opens with the scene-setting death of an undercover DEA agent investigating drug trafficking on the island paradise of Kauai. This is followed by Dex and his fellow law enforcement officers setting up as more undercover agents to investigate her death and whether the resort and its owner are involved. Dex and his K-9, Barnabas, pose as a PI moonlighting as a piano player at the resort.

Widow Katrina works hard to keep her resort going after her husband's death. She's drawn to her new piano player but isn't sure if she's ready to do anything about it. When she receives a mysterious and vaguely threatening note, she hires PI Dex to investigate it. When she gets a second note claiming that he isn't who he says he is, Katrina wonders if she can trust him.

I enjoyed seeing the development of the relationship between Dex and Katrina. The sparks between them are evident from the start, but Dex is there to do a job, not get involved with a possible suspect. Fortunately, he is quickly convinced of her innocence and can confide in her about his identity. As they spend time together looking for the truth behind her husband's death and that of the DEA agent, their attraction continues to grow. I liked how they found they had much in common and enjoyed spending time together outside the investigation. But Katrina is rooted to her lodge, and Dex travels a lot in his work for the DEA. Is it possible to have a successful relationship under those conditions? When Katrina's life is in danger, both realize that being together is what's important. I loved the ending and seeing how they overcame the obstacles.

The suspense of the story was good. I liked following the investigators as they tracked leads and tried to connect the dots. The threats against Katrina kept her and Dex on edge, while hints of her husband's actions led to other revelations. The intensity increased as they closed in on the ringleaders. The final confrontation was a nail-biter with a twist Katrina didn't see coming. I loved seeing her strength as she stood up against her captor. The resolution was good, and the epilogue was a great wrap-up.

The Valentine's Do-Over - Michelle Lindo-Rice (HSE #2962 - Feb 2023)

Sworn off love, they'll soon discover
As valentines, they're into each other!

When radio personalities Selena Cartwright and Trent Moon share their Valentine's Day trauma stories and why they've sworn off love, the gala celebrating singlehood is born! Planning the event has Trent and Selena seeing -- and wanting -- each other more than just professionally. But if they're found out, it could ruin their reputations and careers. As the gala approaches, can they overcome past heartache and possibly discover that Trent + Selena = True Love 4-Ever?

Good friends to lovers story. Selena is a hard-working therapist who also partners with Trent on a radio talk show. When one of their listeners shares how much they hate Valentine's Day, it sets off a firestorm of responses. Even Selena and Trent share their Valentine's woes and why they don't do relationships. As a result, the Valentine's Mingle for Singles Ball was born.

I liked both Trent and Selena. Trent has been a radio host for a long time. He has a reputation as a ladies' man who doesn't get serious about anyone. He has a bad relationship in his past and has no plans to risk his heart again. Trent also has custody of his younger sister, who has Downs Syndrome. He's very protective of her and sometimes takes it too seriously. He also has a good heart, which is evident in his behind-the-scenes actions.

Selena is a woman who likes helping others which is why she is such a terrific therapist. She applies that same heart to the people who call in to the radio show. Her beef with Valentine's Day stems from her father's desertion of her and her mother. Part of the book deals with Selena and her relationship with her mother.

The relationship that develops between Trent and Selena is a slow burn. It begins in November with a letter from a listener who talks about the effects of the holidays on single people. Their chemistry is evident during their show, but previously all of their interactions were work-related. Though there are sparks between them, Trent keeps his personal and professional lives separate. As they spend time together planning the Valentine's event, those lines begin to blur. The sparks between them continue to grow until they can't resist giving in to them. However, the more they are together, feelings past the attraction have them wanting more. When Selena gets spooked by those feelings and pulls away, Trent must convince her to take a chance. I loved the ending and seeing each overcome their fears and look to a future together.

I also liked the secondary characters. Selena's friend Nadine does a terrific job of giving her a kick in the pants when she needs it. I'd like to see her get a story of her own, maybe with Trent's friend. Trent's two buddies, James and Dontae, were fantastic at giving Trent support when he needed it and pushing when he was too cautious. I'd like to see them get happy endings, too. My favorite of these characters was Trent's sister Pammie. She's sweet and caring, and I loved her enthusiasm. I liked how she immediately connected with Selena. Watching her stand up to Trent when he was too protective made me proud of her. She also had great advice for him at the end of the book.

Jasmine's Guardian - Josie Jade, Regan Black (Calamitte Jane Pub - Jan 2023)

Series: Never Too Late for Love (Book 2)

Jasmine Campbell may live on a paradise island, but she keeps her suitcase packed—ready to run at a moment’s notice.

She doesn’t correct her fellow islander’s assumptions that she’s some middle-aged woman recovering from relationship problems. No one knows the truth: she’s running for her life from people who want her dead for witnessing a murder.

Retired SEAL Cameron Burton knows there’s more to Heartbreak Key’s quiet new waitress than some sort of breakup. The haunted look she tries to conceal has all his protective instincts kicking into overdrive.

She’s hiding something—something terrifying her—and there’s no way Cameron’s going to sit back and do nothing. Especially when the danger shows up on his island.

He'll prove to Jasmine it’s not too late for her to stop running. And it’s never too late for love...

Good book that is a quick read at 139 pages, but not short on romance or suspense. This is the second book in the Never Too Late for Love series, and each book is a stand-alone though there are cross-over characters. In this book, we get to see a little more of Hoss and Vanessa from Vanessa's Guardian and some other island residents.

Jasmine came to the island three months earlier and took a job as a waitress at the Salty Beast. She keeps to herself and tries to blend in with everyone else. Nobody can know that she is on the run after witnessing a murder - a murder that still haunts her dreams and causes panic attacks.

Cameron is intrigued by what little he has seen of Jasmine. When he witnesses one of her panic attacks during a storm, he suspects there's more than a bad break-up in her past.

I loved seeing the relationship develop between Jasmine and Cameron. His protective instincts are aroused when he sees the terror in her eyes during her panic attack. His calm demeanor helps her pull herself together and enables her to ask him to stay with her during the storm. But though she is attracted to him, she refuses to get involved in a relationship when she could be forced to run at any time. Cameron isn't easily discouraged and is determined to stick close, even if that means staying in the friend zone. But with the help of some motherless kittens, Cameron can get past Jasmine's walls. I loved seeing the attraction build between these two lonely people and cheered when they gave in to the sparks they felt. I especially enjoyed seeing Cameron overcome Jasmine's age-driven insecurities by showing that he thinks she's a sexy woman.

The suspense of the story was terrific. We immediately know why Jasmine is afraid and the precautions she takes to be safe. When trouble finds her on a trip to another island, it's good that Cameron is there to save her. It's then that she finds out that there is more to what she saw the night of the murder. Her confusion is understandable, and with Cameron's help, they find what the bad guys are looking for. But before they can do anything about it, they find that trouble has followed them home. The final confrontation was a nail-biter, and I loved seeing Jasmine take some of the action into her own hands. I also enjoyed how some of the townspeople also helped.

I liked the ending and seeing Jasmine and Cameron look to a future together. It is lovely to have a series that stars older men and women who can work through issues without a bunch of drama.

A Season of Flirtation - Julia Justiss (HH #1702 - Feb 2023)

Series: Least Likely to Wed (Book 1)

Her lessons in flirtation…
Could work too well!

When Lady Laura Pomeroy offers to give her friend lessons on surviving the Season, she doesn't expect her friend's brother to join! Banker Miles Rochdale is dubious of the aristocracy and clearly thinks Laura is shallow and silly. Frustratingly, mathematical genius Laura finds herself attracted to him and enjoys challenging his assumptions. But, as a marquess's daughter, there's no point impressing Miles because she'll never be allowed to marry someone in the trade…

Good book about the perils and hypocrisy that face those who find love outside their approved social class. Lady Laura didn't grow up as nobility, but when her father unexpectedly became a marquess, she learned to navigate the ton. Laura has no interest in marriage at this time. She prefers to care for her ailing father and spend time indulging her love of mathematics and numbers. A husband would only get in the way of those pastimes.

When Laura meets the shy banker's heiress, Susanna Rochdale, she offers to teach her how to deal with the less pleasant members she's sure to encounter. Susanna is a sweet young lady and feels overwhelmed by the idea of facing Society. She and Laura quickly become friends, and Laura's lessons give Susanna the confidence she needs. I loved Laura's down-to-earth and practical advice. The only fly in the ointment is Susanna's brother, Miles.

Miles has a very poor opinion of the aristocracy thanks to a failed romantic relationship several years earlier and the attitudes of those he encounters at his bank. He is suspicious of Laura's intentions and attends many of Susanna's lessons, determined to stop them if he sees anything he doesn't like. It doesn't take long to realize that Laura is a sweet and honorable woman.

I enjoyed watching the relationship between Laura and Miles develop. The sparks are evident between them from the moment they meet, though both try to resist them. Miles is a commoner who is (gasp!) in trade, and Laura is a Society lady. While an aristocratic man may marry a well-dowered commoner woman without repercussions, the same doesn't go for the reverse. A woman who marries "down" will be shunned by Society. But over the course of Susanna's lessons, Laura and Miles become friends, discovering that they have much in common. I loved Laura's excitement at finding someone who understands her love of numbers and her relief at her ability to be herself with him. Miles is captivated by Laura's intelligence and beauty.

I ached for both as they realized that their feelings would have no happy resolution. Then Laura's father suffers from a financial disaster, and Laura's future looks bleak. I loved how Miles's protective instincts were aroused. The ball scene drove home the hypocrisy of the ton, and I loved the effect it had on Miles. His actions showed how deeply he cared for Laura but still denied his feelings to protect her reputation. I loved the ending and seeing Laura take her happiness into her own hands. The scene at the bank was fantastic, and the epilogue was great.

Spurred to Justice - Delores Fossen (HI #2121 - Feb 2023)

Series: Law in Lubbock County (Book 4)

A lawman confronts his past and a predator in the Texas heat…

A taunting text from a serial killer gives FBI agent Nolan Dalton only minutes to save the next victim. Former cop Adalyn Baxter -- and Nolan's ex-girlfriend -- receives the same message. That's just the beginning of a cunningly orchestrated plan that unearths a shocking secret about Nolan. As the Texas lawman struggles to come to terms with his past and protect Adalyn, a madman's end game could bury them both.

Terrific conclusion to the series. The book starts with a rush as Nolan and his partner race to save the next victim of a serial killer after receiving a disturbing text from him. Someone had gotten ahead of them when they arrived at the scene. Adalyn, a former cop and current security specialist, had received the same text. The three saved the terrified woman together, but the surprises weren't over. Nolan was stunned to see Adalyn there. They were together until a murderer out to get her shot and killed his father by mistake. Their relationship couldn't survive the guilt and trauma, and they parted ways. Now Adalyn and Nolan are the targets of that same serial killer and his mind games.

I liked watching the rekindling of the relationship between Adalyn and Nolan. It is evident from the beginning that their attraction is as strong as ever, but neither can forget the circumstances that drove them apart. Adalyn still feels overwhelming guilt about Bill Dalton's death, and though Nolan doesn't hold her responsible, he hasn't been able to get past it. That won't stop him from keeping her safe while they look for the killer. The more time they spend together, the more he realizes he'd never stopped loving her. Meanwhile, Adalyn is sure they have no future together because of her connection to his father's murder. Both need to face that obstacle before they can move on. I loved the ending and seeing them look forward to a fresh start together.

The story's suspense had me glued to the pages from start to finish. Nolan and his partner, Cody, have been chasing the serial killer known as the Grave Digger for months. Adalyn's involvement added another layer of complexity, further complicated by the identity of the latest victim - Jeb Mercer's housekeeper, Caroline. When Jeb shows up, also having received a text from the killer, it becomes clear that the Grave Digger is playing a complicated game with them. Nolan is hit with a shocking secret about his past that throws everything he believes about who he is into question.

As Adalyn and Nolan dig deeper into the leads they uncover, the attacks against them escalate. Twists and turns and attempts at misdirection kept me turning the pages as they closed in on the identity of the Grave Digger. The final confrontation was a nail-biter, with Adalyn and Caroline in mortal danger and Nolan and the others racing to save them. The shocking identity of the killer and his motivations and manipulations added an extra layer of emotion to the conclusion.

Three Woofs for the Dead, White and Blue - Laura Quinn (Laura Quinn - June 2019)

Series: Pawtisserie Mysteries (Book 1)

It's all paws on deck as Claire Noble and her pawtner Baron open the Posh Pup Pawtisserie in the midst of North Haven's Fourth of July festivities. Tails are wagging in anticipation of their grand opening ice cream social.

Claire is baking up a storm while her Chief Tasting Officer supervises quality and charms new customers. Not only are they launching their four-paw bakery, the pair must prepare for the town’s North at Fourth Fest, farmers markets, dog adoption events and a pawtriotic apple pie fundraiser .

Just when she thinks she has everything under control, the harried baker’s friend is arrested for murder! Now she and her clever Eurasier must sniff out clues to find the real killer.

More than fireworks are set off this Independence Day, proving murder never takes a holiday.

Fun mystery that kept me guessing to the end. The story opens as Claire prepares for her store's grand opening, the Posh Pup Pawtisserie. Her Eurasier pup, Baron, is a finicky eater, and Claire has put her experience creating foods for him to work in this endeavor. She is also heavily involved in community activities such as the town's Fourth of July celebration, dog adoption events, and a veterans and dogs charity fundraiser.

The first few chapters deal with her preparations and getting to know Claire, her friends, and various townspeople. A slight confrontation with an overly controlling official puts Claire and Baron in the car pulling the float rather than on the float itself. There she meets Nick, a hunky local firefighter whose cheerfulness makes the ride go much faster. He jumps in to help Claire with her setup and invites her to watch the fireworks from behind the scenes with him. There's lots going on at the festival, and I enjoyed seeing Claire's success.

But not everything is apple pie and fireworks. The next morning the festival's chairman, Kim, is found dead on the party boat. When Kim is rumored to be having an affair with Claire's friend Traci's husband, that makes Traci the number one suspect. Claire knows that there is no way Traci would have killed Kim and recruits her friends Marti and Bob to help her prove Traci's innocence.

There are plenty of twists and turns in this investigation. The more Claire noses around, the more questions she has. When two other people wind up dead, including Traci's husband, things don't look good for Traci. Claire's determination to find the truth kept me hooked as she dug deeper into the lives of the deceased. Political, financial, and emotional shenanigans created quite the tangle for Claire to unravel. When the final confrontation came, the killer nearly had another victim. The killer was not who I thought it was, and the motive was undoubtedly convoluted, but it all worked out in the end.

I liked meeting various townspeople and business owners, but there were so many of them it was hard to keep track of who was who. I didn't much care for some of the uber-wealthy folks who showed up. I was glad Claire got their business, but they were over-the-top entitled. I preferred the characters who worked with Claire, who seemed much more down-to-earth.

Beguiling Her Enemy Warrior - Lucy Morris (HH #1705 - Feb 2023)

Series: Shieldmaiden Sisters (Book 3)

Kidnapped by the warrior
Tempted by the man…

Captured by the infamous Lord Rhys, a Welsh prince intent on revenge against her family, Viking healer Helga must keep her wits about her if she's to be freed. Easier said than done when she desires him rather than fears him! Helga senses there's good inside Rhys and feels compelled to reach his heart. But first, she must make him see there's more to her than just his enemy…

Fantastic conclusion to the series. This book mostly takes place at the same time as the previous book (Tempted by Her Outcast Warrior) but from the viewpoints of Helga and Rhys.

Helga is the youngest of the three sisters and the only one who is not a warrior. She has always felt like she is a disappointment and a burden to her family. Her talents lie in other directions - healing, organizing, and understanding human nature. All of those qualities become vital in this book.

Rhys is a Welsh noble whose sister was supposed to marry Halfdan (The Viking She Would Have Married) to cement an alliance with Halfdan's father, Ulf. The marriage fell through when Halfdan married Valda, and Rhys's sister eloped with her bodyguard. Rhys only knows that she has disappeared and blames Ulf and his family. He kidnaps Helga to force Ulf to return his sister. He thinks Helga is the weakest of the sisters and gets quite a surprise.

I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Helga and Rhys. Many years earlier, Helga had a dream of a black dragon with blue eyes carrying her away and believed it was a sign of her marriage. Rhys is known as the Black Dragon in his homeland of Wales. When Helga first sees him, she is immediately drawn to him, though her initial fascination takes a bit of a hit when he kidnaps her. Rhys is attracted to Helga, but she is the enemy and his hostage, so she is off-limits.

The journey back to Rhys's lands was an exciting trip. Though she is a hostage, Helga is treated well, and it isn't long before her feelings for Rhys return and begins to grow. As she learns of his reasons for taking her, Helga's empathy leads to her desire to help him. Rhys is weighed down by his responsibilities to his people and his land. He was raised to put them first, before his desires and happiness. As a result, Rhys protects his heart by keeping everyone at a distance. I loved watching Helga get under his skin and stir up the emotions he's kept locked away.

I enjoyed the effects the journey had on Helga and Rhys. Helga is open about her feelings of inadequacy around her family. As he gets to know her, Rhys can't understand their attitude and becomes angry on her behalf. I love how he learned to listen to her insights and ideas and showed her the respect she deserved. His treatment of her boosted her self-esteem. I loved seeing her confidence grow. Rhys is intense and focused to the point of tunnel vision on his sister's rescue and his issues with Ulf. I loved seeing Helga's success at breaking through some of that intensity and getting him to look at the bigger picture.

I liked seeing Helga settle in as a "guest" in Rhys's home. It doesn't take her long to feel as though she belongs there. Rhys feels the same way but fights his feelings because of the events of his past. Helga's love and empathy for him enable her to finally get him to open up to her. I loved how she showed him that he deserves love and happiness, too. However, Rhys still has some major trust issues, and as the book reaches its climax, he has choices to make. Brynhild and Erik's arrival with news of his sister and his reaction to it put his newly committed relationship with Helga at risk. A heartbreaking scene between Helga and Rhys exposes his fears and drives Helga to call him out on his hypocrisy. The ending is intense as Helga takes a desperate chance to save the man she loves, and Rhys realizes his mistakes almost too late. I was glued to the pages as I read the intense battle scene. The post-battle scenes were terrific as Rhys faced Helga and her family. It was an eye-opening experience for him, and I laughed out loud at some of his encounters.

The epilogue was wonderful. I loved seeing how the couples from each book have progressed with their relationships. Each is consistent with their personalities but shows how they have grown and changed. I adored Rhys's surprise for Helga, showing the depth of his love and understanding of who she is.

Tempted by Her Outcast Viking - Lucy Morris (HH #1681 - Oct 2022)

Series: Shieldmaiden Sisters (Book 2)

Tempted by the warrior…
But she'll never wed!

Brynhild had once been close to Erik -- until he'd betrayed her, and she'd hoped never to see him again. Now the fiercely independent shieldmaiden needs Erik's skills to rescue her sister. Striking a truce with the tough, isolated loner, they reach a mutually beneficial deal: help her and, in return, she'll help him in his quest to find a wife -- by teaching him how to please a woman in bed!

Terrific book that caught my attention from the beginning and kept me hooked to the last page. The story picks up immediately after the end of the previous book (The Viking She Would Have Married). While this can be read as a standalone, I feel the reader gets a deeper understanding of these characters by reading the other book first.

Brynhild and Erik had once been friends until he betrayed her. Years later, she'd hoped never to see him again, but with his half-brother marrying her sister, that was a forlorn hope. Erik has been tasked with helping Brynhild, her mother, and her youngest sister, Helga, find land to purchase. But before he can do that, Helga is kidnapped, and Brynhild needs his help to rescue her sister.

I liked Brynhild and Erik. Brynhild is strong and capable, with a fierce reputation as a shieldmaiden; she sees herself as her family's protector. As a result, she doesn't plan to marry, though she occasionally finds herself wanting more. Though supremely confident in her fighting abilities, she is very self-conscious about her appearance. Tall and muscular, she's been teased and bullied about her looks since she was a child, and she feels unlovable and unattractive. But there is also a softness to her that she keeps well hidden.

Amazingly, Erik has turned out to be the good man he is. His mother was a Persian noblewoman captured and enslaved by his Viking father, making him a slave, too. He experienced humiliation and prejudice from both sides of his heritage and was accepted by neither one. His father was physically and emotionally abusive. Recently freed from his enslavement through the efforts of his half-brother Halfdan, Erik is ready for the next stage of his life. But he puts that on hold to help Brynhild rescue her sister. He also hopes to make amends for past mistakes he made with her.

I enjoyed watching the relationship between Brynhild and Erik develop. Several flashbacks show their past and the events that drew them together and drove them apart. Brynhild still harbors a great deal of anger over his actions years ago and is not happy about the attraction she feels toward him. At the same time, Erik knows he wants Brynhild in his life but has no confidence that she would ever feel the same way. Forced together on their search, their sparks continue to grow while they work through their past issues. In an interesting role reversal, Brynhild is the experienced one of the pair. Erik has held himself back for reasons that are both admirable and heartbreaking. I loved seeing his first experiences with tenderness and passion happen with the woman who has held his heart for so long. Ultimately, will Brynhild's need to protect Erik from her family's troubles cause her to deny her feelings for him? Or will Erik be able to convince her that they can overcome anything if they are together?

I liked the intensity of the plot. Helga is kidnapped as a hostage by Rhys, the Black Dragon, who blames Erik's father for the failed marriage bargain that would have married his sister to Halfdan. Erik and Brynhild must find the sister, who ran off with her bodyguard and return her to Rhys to free Helga. While hot on the heels of the runaway couple, Erik and Brynhild experience various situations calling for their cooperation and trust. An unexpected twist changes the dynamic of their mission, and the result is different from what they wanted. I ached for Brynhild and her fears for Helga's safety. The epilogue hints at Helga's story, and I'm glad I already have it to read next.

One of the things I enjoyed about this book was the richness of the descriptions. Whether it was the landscape, the people, or the action, the depth of detail made the scenes come alive. I was intrigued enough to look up the names of the towns to see what they are today and follow along on a map.
